Supported video and lossless audio formats
The Library recognizes a wide range of local container formats without requiring you to transcode files on your computer first. Track presence is probed directly from the file, with extension fallback for common media formats.
You can import and play both high-bitrate video containers and lossless or compressed audio tracks in one place:
- Video formats: MKV, MP4, MOV, M4V, M2TS, TS, AVI, WebM, FLV, MPEG, MPG and 3GP.
- Audio formats: FLAC, ALAC, APE, WAV, AAC, M4A, MP3, OPUS, OGG and WMA.
- Playback progress is tracked per file so you can use Continue Watching to resume right where you left off.
Import from Local Files or the system Photo Library
Open Library to see Local Files, Photos, Private Files and Network Links. In Local Files, use Import Files (+) to pick videos or audio from Apple’s Files app on iPhone and iPad or from Finder on Mac.
Choose Photos in Library and grant access (Allow Photo Library Access) to browse videos and photos stored in your system photo library without duplicating everything upfront. From Photos, you can play a video directly or choose Import to Local Files or Import to Private Files.
Inside Local Files, filter by All, Video or Audio, filter by origin (All Origins, Imported or App Download), search file names, and sort by Recently Added or Recently Played.
Lock Private Files with Face ID, Touch ID or password
Private Files keeps personal audio and video separate from your main library list and protects them with device authentication. On iPhone and iPad, unlocking uses Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode; on Mac, it uses Touch ID or your Mac login password.
You can import files directly into Private Files or move existing items between Local Files and Private Files:
- Open Library → Private Files and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode/password.
- Use the plus (+) button to choose Import Private Files, or open More Actions on an item in Local Files and choose Move to Private Files.
- Choose Lock Now at any time to relock Private Files immediately without waiting for the app to close.
- Optionally turn on Disable during private playback in settings so system Now Playing controls do not display details while a private file plays.
Play or save direct HTTP and HTTPS network links
If you host your own media files over HTTP or HTTPS (for example on a home server or personal storage), open Library → Network Links.
Use Quick Play to open a media URL immediately, or choose Add Network Link to save an address with a custom display name (such as Home Media Library) and optional custom HTTP Request Headers (Header Name and Value) for authenticated links.
Download episodes for offline playback
When viewing a title that offers downloadable episodes, choose Download Episodes to select individual episodes or Select All. Open Downloads from the navigation bar or Settings to view active download speed, progress, and storage usage.
You can pause and resume individual episodes or use Pause All and Resume All. Single-file media resumes from the exact byte offset, and segmented HLS/DASH tasks resume from the last completed segment.
Completed episodes are registered into your Library so you can play them offline. Deleting a download task removes the task entry while keeping completed episodes in your Library. Note that switching to a different subscription pauses active downloads from the previous source until you switch back, and live broadcasts without a fixed end cannot be downloaded.
