Frequently asked questions

Short answers about Calyx TV, the native video library and player for iPhone, iPad and Mac.

About Calyx TV

What is Calyx TV?

Calyx TV is a native video library and player for iPhone, iPad and Mac. You bring your own videos, and Calyx TV organizes them into one library and plays them with HDR, smart subtitles and a built-in native player. It is currently in public beta on TestFlight.

Is Calyx TV free?

Yes. The public beta is free to join and use through TestFlight, Apple’s app for testing beta software. A beta can have bugs, and each build stops working after 90 days, so keep TestFlight updated. Any future pricing will be announced here and in the Telegram community.

Which devices does Calyx TV support?

Calyx TV runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 17 or later, and on Mac with macOS 15 or later. An Android version is planned, but there is no release date yet. Join the Telegram community to hear about it first.

Joining the beta

How do I join the Calyx TV beta?

Install TestFlight from the App Store, then open the Calyx TV invite link on your iPhone, iPad or Mac and tap Accept. After that, tap Install. TestFlight keeps the app updated, and you can leave the beta at any time from the TestFlight app.

The TestFlight link says the beta is full or won’t open. What now?

Public TestFlight links accept a limited number of testers, so a full beta shows a message instead of an install button. Check that TestFlight is installed and that you are signed in to your Apple Account, then try again later. News about new spots is posted in the Telegram community.

Do I need to reinstall when a new build comes out?

No. TestFlight installs new builds as updates, so you do not need to delete the app first. Turn on automatic updates in TestFlight to get them without tapping. Each build stops opening after 90 days, which is why staying on a recent build matters.

Playback

Does Calyx TV support HDR?

Yes, where your device and display allow it. Calyx TV passes HDR video through to the screen, including files that carry dynamic HDR metadata. What you see depends on the video file, your device and your display, so results can differ between an iPhone, an iPad and a Mac.

What subtitle formats does it support?

Calyx TV shows the subtitle tracks inside your video files, including image-based PGS subtitles, and can search online for subtitles that match what you are watching. While you watch, you can adjust the subtitle delay, size and distance from the bottom of the screen to suit your display.

Videos and privacy

Where do my videos come from?

From you. Calyx TV does not provide, host or sell any videos. You play files from your own storage and from cloud drives you sign in to, and you can add your own data sources, including sources that use the CatPawOpen protocol. You are responsible for what you add, so only play content you have the right to watch.

Does Calyx TV support CatPawOpen data sources?

Yes. Calyx TV can load data sources that follow the CatPawOpen protocol, so you can add the sources you already use. Calyx TV itself includes no sources and provides no content. A source is code you choose to install, so only add sources you trust and have the right to use.

What does iCloud sync cover?

iCloud sync is optional and off by default. You choose what syncs: your favorites and watch history, and the sources you added. Your videos and downloads are never part of it, and app settings stay on each device. Sync runs through your own iCloud account, so each device needs to be signed in to iCloud.
