Load, search and customize danmaku comments
Calyx TV includes a native danmaku overlay for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Turn comments on or off during playback, search matching episode danmaku manually, and tune screen area, opacity, speed, timing offset and color gradients.
Updated
Turn danmaku on or off during playback
While a video is playing, reveal the player controls and look for the Danmaku button (marked D / DM or Danmaku). On iPhone and iPad, use Enable danmaku in the danmaku panel; on Mac, choose Turn On Danmaku or Turn Off Danmaku.
When the current video and active source provide public danmaku, Calyx TV loads the comment timeline automatically and keeps it synchronized when you pause, seek or change playback speed.
Search and load matching episode danmaku manually
If no comments appear automatically—or if you are watching a local file or a title whose name did not match automatically—open the danmaku controls and choose Search danmaku (Search Danmaku on Mac).
Enter the title keyword, pick the matching series or movie from the search results, and select the episode you are watching. Calyx TV replaces the active comment timeline immediately and returns to playback when you choose Done searching danmaku.
Adjust display area, opacity, font size and speed
Open Danmaku settings from the player controls to keep scrolling comments readable without covering the actors or subtitles below:
Every adjustment updates the overlay live so you can preview the density on screen:
- Display area: choose how much of the screen height comments can occupy, from 20% (top fifth of the screen, default) up to 100%.
- Opacity: set comment transparency between 20% and 100% (default 80%).
- Font size: scale comment text from 24 pt to 64 pt (default 36 pt) for phone, tablet or desktop viewing distances.
- Danmaku speed: adjust scrolling speed from 0.5× (slower) to 2.0× (faster), with 1.0× as the default.
Fix danmaku delay and choose color gradients
When comments come from a release with a different intro length, use Danmaku delay in Danmaku settings to shift the comment timeline between −10 seconds and +10 seconds without affecting audio or subtitle sync.
You can also customize the visual appearance of comments:
- Fade at edges: softly fades scrolling comments in and out near the left and right edges of the video frame.
- Color gradient: applies a left-to-right color gradient to standard white comments while preserving comments that already carry their own color.
- Gradient presets: choose among bilibili, Sweet, Cyber, Sunset, Ocean, Mint, Rainbow, or Mix (which assigns each comment a consistent preset based on its text).
If danmaku does not appear
If the overlay stays empty after turning danmaku on, check the player status message:
- No danmaku to display: the loaded comment file has no entries for the current time range, or no match was found yet—try Search danmaku with a shorter keyword.
- This video does not support public danmaku: the current playback item has public danmaku disabled.
- This player does not support danmaku: switch to a player configuration in Settings that supports the native danmaku overlay.
- Danmaku file exceeds the 16 MiB limit or invalid XML response: the remote danmaku service returned an oversized or malformed payload; try selecting another episode source in Search danmaku.
